There are also cheaper, yet still value-for-money hotels in town, such as the comfortable, family-run Glen Hotel, which is situated alongside a beautiful, invigorating riverside walk and has lovely gardens of its own. There is freshly-cooked, good quality English food, with filling breakfasts and lots of choice.

If you prefer B&Bs there are some that are very good value, notably Hillholm and Sunnybrae House, or if you are looking for the cheapest what about the SYHA Broadmeadows Youth Hostel at nearby Yarrowford, five miles west of Selkirk, which is open from the end of March to the end of September. This was the first SYHA Youth Hostel, opened in 1931. Small and friendly, it is a particularly popular base for mountain bikers, only a half hour drive from the superb Glentress Forest mountain bike trails. Walkers can go by the Southern Upland Way via the Minchmuir Road to Traquair House, museum and brewery. There’s good fishing and pony trekking locally as well as some very scenic cycle routes.
There is also the Victoria Caravan and Camping Site, located next to the river Ettrick, which provides some attractive riverside walks, Covering three acres, with 60 pitches, the site is only a short walk away from the town and all amenities. It is also next to an indoor swimming pool which has a cafe, and other facilities.
Self-catering cottages are extremely popular these days, and there are a dozen to choose from in the vicinity. They are at Eildon (sleeps 4-5), Teviot (2-3), Ettrick (4-5), Ivanhoe (2), Yarrow (6), Melrose (4), Kielder (4-5), Marmion (2), Traquair (4-5), Rob Roy (4), Esk (2-4) and Redgauntlet (4-6).
