The Bowhill Estate

The Scotts of Buccleuch have been part of Scottish Borders history for more than seven centuries and their principal house, Bowhill, situated three miles west of Selkirk, where the B7009 turns south off the A708, is today home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry. They were once the largest landowners in the Borders and fabulously wealthy, a fact reflected by the amazing collection of French antiques and European paintings on display in the internationally renowned Buccleuch art collection, which includes works by Canaletto, Guardi, Reynolds and Gainsborough.

Bowhill sits at the heart of an energetic country estate amidst the magical scenery of the Yarrow and Ettrick valleys, and wildlife enthusiasts will be enthralled as they explore the wooded hills of the Country Park via a network of footpaths and cycle trails.

Much of the best of all that is Bowhill comes together in the Courtyard, where visitors can refresh themselves with home baking in the licensed Minstrel Tearoom, visit the historic Victorian kitchen, browse the gift shop with its local crafts and other mementos and discover more about one of the valley’s most remarkable sons, James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd, in a special exhibition.

Field sports and fishing have long been synonymous with Bowhill, while the woodland adventure playground and a full programme of events throughout the year add to the variety of activities on offer.
